Session topics were selected based on library input and presenters will include PLSB Library Consultants as well as other library professionals from participating libraries in Manitoba. Library staff and board members are encouraged to attend all or part of the full day session which is open to both new and seasoned library staff.

PLS Pre-Conference Day Program: Public Library Training

Block A (9:00am to 10:30am): New Librarian Training

9:00 – 9:30: Public Library Services Branch – Who We Are and What We Do

Meet the staff at the Public Libraries Branch – introductions will be made and explanations of what each individual staff member specializes in will be explained.

9:30 – 10:00: Public Libraries Act and Grant Requirements

Learn the main points from the Public Libraries Act and all required documents and actions required to maintain eligibility for government assistance.

10:00 – 10:30: Statistics, Data Analysis & Patron Feedback

Learn how to use Counting Opinions – LibPas: where to input yearly stats, how to generate and create reports. LibSat:  how to promote and use the data collected from the Customer Satisfaction Survey.

10:30 – 10:45 – Coffee Break

Block B (10:45am to 12:30pm): Library Promotion Training

10:45 - 11:15: Advocacy 

What are you doing to advocate for your public library? Kelly Murray, Head Librarian at Bibliotheque Allard Regional Library shows the presentation she gave to her municipality requesting additional funding.

11:15 – 11:45: Social Media

Learn how to effectively use Social Media to get the most out of promoting your library and its resources and services.

11:45 – 12:15: Marketing the Public Library

Tabitha Norby, Library & Information Instructor at RRC presents on how to market your public library.


12:30 – 1:30 – Lunch Break

Block C (1:30pm to 3:00pm): Public Librarian Training 

1:30 – 2:00: Searching our Resources: eLM, fILL and EBSCOhost.

A short presentation (10 mins each) on how to search and request items using the three databases provided by PLS: eLibraries Manitoba, fILL and EBSCOhost.

2:00 – 2:30: Staff Training

This section will focus on effective and easy ways to provide staff training and education. 

2:30 – 3:00: Collection Development 

Learn the basics of Collection Development – creating a purchasing strategy, selecting material for your collection and weeding tips.

3:00 – 3:15 – Coffee Break

Block D (3:15pm – 4:30pm): Lightning Sessions – Recommended Topics

3:15 – 3:45: Accessibility Plans – How to Create Them?

The Disability Issues Office will present on how to start your accessibility plan.

3:45 – 4:00: Applying for Grants

A short overview of the process involved when applying for grants for your library.

4:00 – 4:15: Consortium Purchasing – What do consortiums do for libraries?

4:15 – 4:30: How to Write an Annual Report?

Learn the basics of writing an effective annual report: what to include.
