Universities have long recognized the need for promoting holistic wellness in their student bodies. Financial literacy is increasingly important for college students, who are facing new and unique financial decisions and obligations. Academic librarians are well situated to be able to meet these needs, not by teaching financial literacy themselves, but by connecting the students with subject experts. This has been done at the University of North Dakota through a partnership between two campus libraries, the Chester Fritz Library and the Harley E. French Library of the Health Sciences, and UND’s Financial Wellness office. For example, both libraries have collaborated with the Financial Wellness Office to provide library programming that includes financial literacy, such as by co-hosting Money Smart Week events. Other opportunities for involvement include embedded librarians facilitating small group discussions on financial topics. For example, the Library of the Health Sciences and Financial Wellness have worked in partnership to hold discussions with student research teams, such as the Native Health Research Team. Our discussion will focus on our collaborations to promote financial literacy, but will also provide insight on ways to build cross-campus collaborations to promote other areas of student wellness.
