Beyond the Desk: Providing Reference at Alternative Points of Need LIMITED

Limited Capacity seats available

Traditionally, the reference desk has always been a critical library service point. Here, patrons are able to receive immediate assistance, and in many cases, develop meaningful connections with library staff. Regardless of the exact question, or the time spent finding a solution, it is clear that these encounters often hold significance for librarians and library users alike. In recent years, however, a shift to alternative service models has become apparent, leading librarians to adopt shorter desk shifts, or to be removed from the “front lines” altogether. As these changes in service become increasingly common, library employees are often left wondering whether reference remains a significant piece of their role, and if so, how this service can continue to be delivered effectively. In this session, presenters will share their experiences in moving away from traditional desk-based reference and discuss alternative methods for meeting the crucial needs of library users.
