Limited Capacity seats available

The number of health related mobile apps available to consumers now exceeds 165,000. Studies have shown that over 50% of these apps have limited functionality. Consumers, without guidance, may choose the most popular apps or try out several in an attempt to determine what is best for them. Some reviews have revealed that a total of 36 apps account for nearly half of all downloads of health apps and 40% of all health apps have fewer than 5,000 downloads. Most apps focus on fitness or wellness by helping the user manage things like count calories or track steps walked.  The most successful health apps leverage all smartphone capabilities, link to external sensors, incorporate alerts and reminders, graphically display user date and link to social media or healthcare providers. In this session we will review issues surrounding app quality and regulation, review and demonstrate helpful consumer health apps, and consider developments that are making health apps more useful to patients and healthcare providers. Attendees will leave this session with a presentation and handouts they can give within their own communities.
